Hi Kai

Thank you for your very interesting post .

I really like how you describe everything being in motion, although a bit unclear about what you mean about a 'right' concept of motion. Do you mean 'which' ( i.e. which kind/type) ?

My research has been concerned with haptic sensation and the experience of touch. In ' Phenomenology of Perception' (2012, p 376 ) the phenomenologist Merleau Ponty wrote (in relation to touch): "...the movement of one's own body is to touch what lighting is to vision." I find that a useful way to think about the body, movement and perception. 'Embodied cognition' holds that human cognitive processes are deeply rooted in the body's sensory and motor interactions with the world. Western ontology has tended to privilege the mind and cognition in the constitution of self; but embodied cognition argues that we should look instead for more complex and plural understandings of the nature of selfhood, that encompass embodiment. This shift of emphasis suggests that the nature of our bodies and how they move and function, affects the fundamental processes of our thinking.

You say "Although I know nothing about dancing that goes beyond the basics I think that motion is a primal constant of the human mind because we live in a world of motion and we perceive motion".

Yes I agree- except for the bit about your knowledge of dancing, because we are always dancing- when using an umbrella, mobile phone, dodging through a crowd, using a pen, checking the time on our wristwatch, brushing our hair, flying a kite, tying a shoe lace, jogging through the city.....

So you know so much more than the basics !!

Best

Fiona

Fiona,

that's a good point. Although I know nothing about dancing that goes beyond the basics I think that motion is a primal constant of the human mind because we live in a world of motion and we perceive motion.

But it's difficult to get the "right" conceptof motion.

From a logical point of view motion creates a difference between two states. This is very binary and misses the duration of the motionwhich is an enduring difference during the process of perception, although motion itself could be regarded as constant. It depends on whether you are comparing two states and apply some kind of scale or whether you watch the process and regard it as a value of itself.

We all know the thoughts about the first mover. That would be the philosophical aspect.

From the artists points of view we could regard motion as the underlying process for a method of reflection i.e. sketching. The mind moves towards something through the kind of motion. It allows to reflect how things are perceived.

Then we had the discussion about Herb Simon and his definition of design. "Design is devising courses of action aimed at changing current situations into preferred ones". Some kind of motion I guess altough it's a perception process that moves from one position to another.

My personal history with this topic:
I had the hope that motion could give me deeper insights into the form/language of how mental models are "written", because motion is describeable by maths. Basically motionis a translation process... like every other form of art and the aesthetic parts of design.
For me everything is some kind of motion, from the contours of classic melodies (which implies motion) to the monotoneous techno beatsto the pen strokes of japanese color wood cuts to my sketching experiences to malewitchs black square. even two colored squares placed next to each other imply some kind of motion through the difference and the scale.
communication is motion in some way. and C

best wishes

Kai
