My experience is also quite different from Klaus's. I think Klaus may have an image of engineers that includes narrow focus, hard edged, numbers-only, individuals who largely sit in cubicles solving differential equations most of their time. There is and always will be a need for that type of engineer. But stemming from perceived needs in industry, and starting at least a decade ago, the engineering professions have understood the need for much more when you think of engineering fields. Having a look (or a re-look) at the old NAE white paper "Engineer of 2020" might help.
