The NMC says they are following in the footsteps of what has just been put into place for doctors yet they have not waited to see how it works in practice and whether, or not, it makes any significant difference to the safety of the medics practice.

So my OHP has already had to face the problem that Jeremy and others are concerned about.

The reassurances required is meant to come primarily from an appraisal done in the workplace. But where does an independent get to do their appraisal????

Our OHP is lucky as we have been able to get someone in GOSH to do it for him even though he only works here one day a week. He also found himself an OH clinical supervisor (from Manchester because no London based supervisor would agree!!) He can have his appraisal here because of the fact that GOSH is his main regular employer. The paperwork he needed to submit for this was key and included work done on audit, any letters of complaint or complement from his clients etc.

I wouldn't dismiss the ideas of the NMC out of hand but it needs to be acknowledged that not ever practising nurse outside of the NHS has access to an appraisal and something equitable and non-discriminatory put in place for them.

Sadly, I won't be here to ring in the changes or fight the good fight but I'll do my best to support you from wherever I end up.

Sue

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] NMC News on revalidation for Nurses

Dear List, If you haven't seen the latest you can read it here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23971498 What are your thougts? I'm particularly interestd to hear your views about how this will affect those of us who are self employed eg do we write our own 'character reference' and as a few of our clients come into the disgruntled category regarding our difference of opinion on their fitness for work, how will this work in practice?

Rgds,

Jeremy
