The wildly inflated prices are not set by humans (or not by sentient ones, at any rate...) - they are set by computers. The sellers do not actually have a copy, they are multiplying the price of a book actually on sale by somebody else by a factor x. If two such clowns encounter each other the price spirals out of control!
