Hi Crispin OK I'll bite (out of curiosity) - how much does it cost to take a whole county worth of these files and convert into useable ARCGIS dataset? DCC are interested in getting this info, but if it will take over 2wks for 2 pcs to process the data ourselves I have a feeling my GIS colleagues will tell me to take a hike and made a bid for their time and by the time it gets into their programme of work it will be 2+ years... Also, regarding your specific question, we do have scripts for creating TAB from jgw/asc, but they are not currently packaged up for non-developers to use. Hi All, I have received all the free LIDAR data from the EA for the whole of Suffolk. We use MapInfo. Anyway I want to put all the .jpg's on a seamless layer which I thought would be easy however: The first problem I have encountered was all the geo-referencing files had the wrong extension .jpgw not .jgw. I managed to batch change these using the command prompt method suggested at http://www.howtogeek.com/111859/how-to-batch-rename-files-in-windows-4-ways-to-rename-multiple-files/ . However I am now stuck as MapInfo wants me to tell it which projection I want it to use for each .jgw file and there are circa 20,000!!! Does anyone know of a way to do this process on mass? Not sure about other GIS setups, but in MapInfo you can play with the translucency settings to view a copy of the same tile (at the same time) with different light settings - i.e. a composite lidar image. Doesn't work so well with more than a couple of tiles. We got hold of the ascii lidar tiles at the end of last year and have since located (probably) in the hundreds of previously unrecorded earthwork sites - including a small number of 'really significant' ones. There are many tiles we haven't looked at yet - it's really worth getting. Helen et al, You should be able to download them as "asc" files which come with MapInfo tab files - careful though as trying to load too many at a time will crash the system (or it does with me anyway). Mike Hemblade at North Lincs also showed me how to get them to show up better by turning on relief shadows - open the "Map" drop down menu, then select "modify thematic map" click on the "styles" button and enable the relief shading. You can also change the tolerance/level of the shading and the colours to make certain features stand out more (or less) which is useful when a tile has big topographical differences. A few people have asked me about how this works... You sign up as a Public Sector organisation, choose what you want, then when you go to 'pay' at the checkout you check the 'non-commercial use' box and enter a reason you want it (I have been putting 'assessment against Historic Environment Record' in that box) then it gives you a 100% discount! They have to approve it, then e-mail you back, then you can download it straight from the site. Brilliant!
