Dear all

Recent discussion on HER Forum has raised a number of concerns relating to the flow of English Heritage reports and data to HERs. We are looking at ways in which we can improve the existing arrangements and hope that the following information and the introduction of a number of forthcoming initiatives will be helpful to HERs.

Historical assessment of sites from the MoD disposals programme: English Heritage can only obtain access to these sites at the invitation of the MoD. The process is first to ask the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) for approval to make the information more widely available. The assessments are completed using pro-forma templates and these, as well as providing a description and historical background, may include sensitive information. The DIO provides the completed templates to its partners and permission is then granted, though this can sometimes take a little while. Until the template has been signed off by the DIO it cannot be released to the HER.

Further details on the transfer of information can be found in the summary of questions and replies following Wayne Cocroft's talk to HER Forum summer meeting in Birmingham posted on the Heritage Gateway-

EH Research Report Series: Investigation & Analysis Division staff have instructions to send copies to the relevant HERs as a matter of course and this is also written into the report series guidelines. Reports that are national in nature and do not contain information of special relevance to individual HERs are an exception. These reports are available via OASIS and also via the Research Report Series database under publications on the EH website. From January 2014 news articles on EH research with links to related reports will feature in an electronic version of Research News. HERs can subscribe to this by visiting http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/rnsubscribe. We will also flag reports from national surveys created under the NHPP on HER Forum when a url becomes available to provide a direct link.

PastScape data: EH applied research, particularly but not exclusively in the area of aerial investigation & mapping, results in the creation of AMIE and PastScape records and not reports. To flag creation of this data, Heritage Data Management will generate a monthly report with lists ordered by county/district/parish of new and amended records to PastScape. The monthly reports will be available on HER Forum file store and notification will be posted each time a new report is added. The first report covering September 2013 will be available during the second week of October.

If you would like further infomation on any of the above, please do get in touch with me off-line.

Best wishes

Jane
