Paul, you highlight a tricky issue – the schools argue defiantly that it is absolutely a GCSE equivalent, but we generally are of the opinion that if they come
to us with a GCSE in English and an IGCSE in English then we regard the GCSE as a better reflection of the learner’s ability. This has obviously caused tension amongst the parents…

Subject: Re: iGCSEs
We are about to have a high-level discussion about the ‘worth’ of the IGCSE English. If UCAS state that it should be recorded as a Level 2 Certificate (and
the Cambridge spec 0522 states this is a Level 2 Certificate), does this mean that universities will NOT see it as a GCSE equivalent? It will be a nightmare scenario for us if different unis/ institutions call it differently, especially if we are enrolling
students onto a ‘GCSE English’ course and then giving them a Level 2 Certificate that is not recognised as an equivalent!
The 0522 spec is a recognised qualification as a Certificate, but the 0500 version (without the S & L element included in the final grade) is listed as an IGCSE
but appears by inference NOT recognised as a UK listed qual, so does it contribute to league tables/ recognised outcomes?
Has anybody had more experience of this, or is this a developing situation?

Wow, what a lot of talk about iGCSEs – thanks, everyone. I’ve just read on the UCAS site that iGCSEs should be being called by centres delivering them ‘level
1 / 2 Certificates’ as there should be a clear distinction between them and GCSEs. Our own lecturers dislike them as there’s no link with the national curriculum. We unfortunately were caught out here as we didn’t know the school leavers would bring with them
these achievements for entry onto our courses – we didn’t know what they were and what sort of value they hold. The schools of course argue that they carry the same performance points, blah blah blah, and are making us look unfair and old fashioned when it
comes to the parents complaining about us not accepting them as valid entry criteria. I don’t think we’ll be doing them very soon esp as we can’t work with Cambridge as they are so inflexible and as you say expensive. I love the small board syndrome expression.

I agree with Paul - Cambridge are the most pernickety board! I think they have small board syndrome. A word of advice for anyone moving to them - ALL of their key dates are different (and earlier) than JCQ dates, and paperwork for access
arrangements and special consideration is much more long winded....and they're expensive. Our teachers and students like the iGCSE though.
Good luck,
Louise

Ditto - we have switched for this year as the English iGCSE has no coursework and hence fits a one year course better.

iGCSE in English seems to be getting super-popular. We are seriously considering a switch ourselves

Hi all
Not our job really, but what are your views on iGCSEs and do you have an admission policy surrounding learners coming into college with these as opposed to GCSEs.
Thanks in advance
