The Institutional Loser
Symposium
Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London.
Thursday November 7th 2013, 6:30-9:00pm.

At a time when winning bids, gaining grants, and securing work has never been as important, much discussion has been focused on how to be successful. However, this symposium aims to open debate and discussion around the contemporary figure of what could be termed “the institutional loser”.

Clearly, there has been much research in recent years surrounding the notion of the institution and what this word might mean, from Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, and more recently Andrea Fraser, Luc Boltanski and Claire Bishop. This word can be understood as a building, an organisation, or, sociologically, as a well-established pattern of behaviour within a culture or mode of being.

But not so much focus has been placed on the loser embedded within the institution. In the mid-fourteenth century the loser was perceived as a destroyer, in the 1500’s as one who suffers loss, yet the contemporary notion of the loser has developed into a figure who fails at an activity, performs badly, commits a criminal act, or one who fails to gain in a transaction.

One of the key aims of the symposium will be to reflect on this shift and its significance for losers today. The symposium addresses this figure of the contemporary loser and its relationship to the institution; specifically the academic institution and the art institution.

Papers and provocations welcome in the following areas:

How does one become an institutional loser?
The institutional loser and the RDF / REF : benchmarks, frameworks, standardisation.
Opting to be a loser: self sabotage & mortification.
How does the institutional loser hold the potential for political resistance? How does an institutional loser negotiate success?
