I agree with the fun approach and also relating it to 'real life' for those attending. We had a training session from an outside well known training firm and their starting sentence was 'How many people here left a file on their desk containing personal data ? '. Most had, so they'd breached the act. On a personal note, I went to the Cadbury's website yesterday to see if I'd won a prize with my chocolate wrapper. They wanted far more info that was necessary to tell me I'd won a free bar of chocolate and would email me the voucher. I intend to complain and ask them to remove my details from their database. We'd never have won any awards for acting, but people remembered the sessions because they were unusual and involved the audience. I'm now back in the public sector and 'fun' is something that other people have... I've always found the key is relevance - start off by grabbing people's attention with something that they can relate to personally ("Hands up if you have kids over 5 years old: congratulations - you were participants in the biggest government dataloss in UK history!" usually gets peoples' attention - the Child Benefit disc loss from 2007 is still making our lives that little bit easier!) and then segue into work-based details and examples. Am also aiming to introduce the idea of the 'Pre-Mortem' into training sessions, where you allow peoples' 'creative pessimism' to shine and ask them 'What's the worst thing that could happen to your work records?' and then discuss what could go wrong and thus how to fix or even prevent it. Hope this helps a little.
