Thanks for those ideas so far, it has given me food for thought. The layer seems to have been close to the topsoil, so it is possible that any ditch cut has been ploughed out, likewise there may have been no evidence remaining of a hedgerow. The site was dug by an amateur group, so I have little else to go on, I am waiting for photos and if they emerge I will post them for you to have a look at. Thanks again Matty
