We allow them to plug their laptop etc whilst it is being used in the library and do not charge. However we do not allow general charging of phones, laptops not in use etc. We do not use circuit breakers & PAT is irrelevant. Trailing wires is a notable H&S problem though so we only allow laptops etc to be plugged in by the walls i.e. no trailing leads are allowed.

Subject: Charging laptops etc
Hello
We are (at last) about to install public access wi-fi in our libraries.
I know this has been asked before, but I can’t find anything very recent on the lists and I’m sure the situation must have changed in the last couple of years.
Would be grateful for advice/information on how you deal with customers needing to plug devices in to charge them – or do you not allow this at all?
If you do, do you enforce the use of rcb/circuit breakers and if so – do you make a charge for using them, loan them/hire them out to customers at all?
How do you deal with laptops not being PAT tested, or is this not an issue?
And finally – H & S, trailing wires etc – has this been a problem at all?
And anything else we might need to consider
Many thanks
Sandra
