1. AGS TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS

 

The Assocation for German Studies invites applications for travel scholarships of up to £250 or €300 each, intended to assist postgraduate members in travelling abroad to carry out research for their thesis or give a paper directly related to their area of study. The scholarships are intended to contribute to the costs of reasonable and necessary travel and/or accommodation.


The deadline for applications is 31 September 2013. If unsuccessful the first time, applicants may re-submit their application in the following round. No further re-submissions will be accepted.

The following criteria of eligibility apply:
• Applicants must have been a fully paid-up member of the AGS for at least three months by the time their application is submitted.
• Applicants must be registered at a university in Great Britain or Ireland for a postgraduate research degree on a topic related to German Studies
• Members who have already received a travelling scholarship from the AGS will not normally be considered for a second award

An application statement of no more than 250 words as a Word document/ pdf should be emailed as an attachment to Professor Sarah Colvin ([log in to unmask]). It should contain the following details:
• The name and contact details of the applicant

• The applicant’s thesis topic or title; the institution at which it is registered; and the full name of the supervisor
• Details of the research or paper, its significance, and its relevance to the applicant’s thesis

• The timing of the trip and a costed breakdown of the items for which the applicant is seeking support
• Details of any other funding for the trip which the applicant has applied for or obtained. Applicants should note that the AGS encourages them also to seek funding from other bodies.

Applicants will be informed of the Committee’s decision within one month of the deadline. Successful applicants will receive their scholarship at that time.

Scholarship holders are required to supply to the Treasurer within three months of the completion of their trip a report on the visit of no more than 200 words, along with any relevant receipts or documentation, or copies thereof. The report must also be submitted as an email attachment, and it may be uploaded to the AGS website. If scholarship holders take any digital pictures they feel might enhance the website, they are welcome to submit these too!


Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the AGS Committee, which retains the right to apply further criteria of selection and eligibility.

 

 

2. AGS PUBLICATION SUBSIDY


The Association for German Studies invites applications for a publication subsidy of up to £500/€600. This is intended to assist members who have completed a PhD and require financial support in order that their thesis be published. The deadline for receipt of applications is 31 September 2013.

The following criteria of eligibility apply:

• Applicants must have been a fully paid-up member of the AGS for at least three months by the time their application is submitted.
• Applicants’ theses must have been registered at a university in Great Britain or Ireland for a PhD on a topic related to German Studies.
• Members in full-time, permanent posts are ineligible to apply.

A brief letter of application should be e-mailed to Professor Sarah Colvin (AGS Vice President, University of Warwick) at [log in to unmask]. It should contain the following details:

• The name and contact details of the applicant.
• The applicant’s PhD thesis topic or title; the institution at which it is registered; and the full name of the supervisor(s).
• The contact details of an academic referee who is able to comment authoritatively on the quality and merit of the thesis. The referee should not have been involved in the supervision of the thesis but may be, for example, an external examiner of the thesis. It is the responsibility of the applicant to contact the referee separately and ensure that a reference is received by the AGS Vice-President (by email: [log in to unmask] or surface mail) by the application deadline.
• The details of any subsidies applied for or obtained for the publication of the thesis. Applicants should note that the AGS encourages them also to seek funding from other bodies.
• Applicants must enclose a copy of the letter of acceptance for publication, as well as confirmation of the need for and level of subsidy.

The successful applicant should note that the subsidy will be released after publication under the following conditions:
• The support of the AGS must be recorded in the acknowledgements of the published version of the thesis.
• The applicant must forward to the Treasurer a photocopy of the contents and acknowledgements pages of the published thesis.

Publication subsidies will be awarded at the discretion of the AGS Committee, which retains the right to apply further criteria of selection and eligibility. Applicants will be informed of the Committee’s decision within two months of the deadline. If unsuccessful the first time, applicants may re-submit their application in the following round. No further re-submissions will be accepted.
