Apologies for cross postings…

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to provide a quick reminder that the August 6 deadline for abstract submission for the GSA Annual Meeting in Denver, CO is rapidly approaching. And encourage you to submit to the following session:

T160. Hot Topics: Understanding Metamorphic Processes in the Middle to Lower Crust

Conveners: Andreas Möller, Nigel M. Kelly

Invited Speakers:

Brad Hacker (UC Santa Barbara)

Patrice Rey (University of Sydney)

Chris Yakymchuk (University of Maryland)

We invite contributions on all geological aspects of high-temperature metamorphism up to, and including UHT-granulites, to elucidate the nature and evolution of the hot middle to lower crust - geochemical, petrological, geochronological, and modeling approaches. Special attention will be reserved for new approaches to phase equilibria and thermometry (including petrochemical modeling and trace element thermometry), microgeochronology, and the integration of multiple techniques and approaches.

Rationale:

Crustal rocks that are the witnesses of processes at elevated crustal geotherms have provided geoscientists for many decades with thought-inspiring controversies.  They continue to be the topic of debate in terms of the significance for the thermal structure of the crust, thermal evolution of the Earth in space and time, and what they may reveal about their potential geologic settings.

"Hot" topics are:

- preservation of information through high-T events,

- melt production and transport during metamorphism,

- growth and resetting of mineral chronometers,

- how to constrain hot crust in models (both thermal and rheological),

- the restite nature of UHT-granulites.

The deadline for abstract submission is 6 August (11:59 pm Pacific time).

See you in Denver,

Andreas  & Nigel
