GRANTS FOR CONSERVATION AND ACQUISITION OF

MANUSCRIPTS AND ARCHIVES

1.  National Manuscripts Conservation Trust

Grants for conservation of manuscripts

Next deadlines 1st October 2013 and 1st April 2014

The National Manuscripts Conservation Trust (NMCT) offers grants for the conservation and preservation of manuscripts and archives.  The next deadline for the submission of applications is 1st October 2013 with results being announced in early December. If you want to plan ahead, the deadline after that is 1st April 2014.

We welcome grant applications from Record Offices, Museums, University’s Archives or Special Collections sections, Cathedral Archives and Libraries, as well as owners of manuscripts that are exempt from capital taxation or owned by a charitable trust.  National institutions in receipt of government funding are not eligible for our support.

Our grants can cover conservation, binding and other preservation measures, including digitisation (providing it is part of a wider conservation project).  The significance of the collection that is the subject of a grant application and also the proposed conservation treatment are considered in detail.  The National Archives provides an expert opinion on all application and this informs the Trustees’ considerations.

Among the current recipients of NMCT grants are the Record Offices of Essex, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Powys, Cornwall and Warwickshire as well as the Universities of Bangor, Southampton and St Andrews.  Other current grant recipients include the Fitzwilliam Museum, St John’s College and the Church of England Record Centre.  The collections currently being conserved thanks to our support range from medieval manuscripts to engineering archives.

Applications must be submitted on our application form, which you can download at www.nmct.co.uk.  If, having consulted our website, you have any queries about whether your project is eligible etc please do contact Mrs Nell Hoare, who manages the Trust.  You can contact her either through the NMCT website or at [log in to unmask] (*please note that this is a new email address) or on 01491 580883

2.  FRIENDS OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARIES

Grants for acquisition of books, manuscripts, archives and collections

Applications accepted throughout the year.

The Friends of the National Libraries (FNL), which was founded in 1931, helps libraries, museums and record offices acquire books, manuscripts and archives.  The FNL helps the nation’s libraries not just national libraries.  We help you to add to your collection and to acquire books, manuscripts and archives that you would not otherwise have the resources to purchase.

We offer significant financial help to national libraries, university libraries, county record offices museums and art galleries to help them acquire printed books, manuscripts, records and archives of historical, literary, artistic, architectural, musical, photographic or suchlike interest, and to assist institutions that are eligible for our support in any other way which the Trustees consider appropriate.

Our two main criteria when awarding grants are the historical, literary and other qualities of the proposed acquisition and its significance to your collection. We also take into account price, condition and provenance.

We usually contribute part of the cost of an acquisition, with the remainder coming from your own or other sources. We can also respond to applications where no other money is available, so long as you have thoroughly explored all other possible sources of support. Our funding ranges from a few hundred pounds to tens of thousands of pounds, and we may be willing to meet the total cost of your acquisition.  Do remember that receiving a grant from the FNL often helps unlock other sources of funding.

Applying for a grant is easy, you just need to write a letter of application and send it to the Honorary Secretary.   For details of the application process, terms and conditions of grant as well as what to include in your letter of application see the FAQ section of the FNL’s website.

If you think that the Friends can help you to meet the cost of your acquisition, please get in touch - we will do our best to help.
