Community Collections & Outreach Archivist – York: Gateway to History project
Salary: CYC Grade 7 (£21,987 - £24,287 pa)
Closing date: Friday 13 Sep 2013
Job Ref: CANS127
We are looking for an imaginative professional archivist who is keen to deploy collections management skills in innovative ways which will enable us to engage with a wider range of communities.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and City of York Council, York: Gateway to History is an exciting project to create a new Archive and Local History Service for York – one which will serve and reflect all the communities and cultures,
past and present, in this ancient city.
We already hold many archives created by York’s communities - individuals, groups, societies, businesses and organisations - from the 16th century onwards. These archives make up a valuable unofficial history of the city, complementing the official record held
in the civic archives. Working with the City Archivist, and supported by volunteers and a Community Collections Assistant, you will plan and implement a step-change improvement in our intellectual control of these private collections.
You will use the principles of “More Product Less Process” to establish a sustainable high-level cataloguing plan for these collections, and to identify areas of strength and weakness in the coverage of the collections.
You will then use the knowledge you have gained to create meaningful ways for a much wider range of communities and viewpoints to become actively involved in the development of the archive. This will include supporting community organisations across the city
to create or manage their own archives, and encouraging them to place these archives with us for permanent preservation.
Through this we will ensure that the city archive comes to represent “all our citizens for all time”, and that it supports the Council’s strategic objective to Build Strong Communities.
In addition to a postgraduate qualification in archives/records management, you will have a sound knowledge of the range of records likely to be generated by community groups and organisations of all types. You will have some knowledge and practical
experience of community outreach activities, and will be able to demonstrate the personal skills to cultivate and build a network of successful work relationships involving multiple partners. You will have excellent personal organisational and time management
skills, and the ability to work independently.
Experience of CALM software and an understanding of the principles of “More Product Less Process” would be highly desirable.
