Colleagues might be aware of the “information landscape” work that has been sponsored by the Regulatory Partnership Group over the past 18 months. This has been looking at the challenges raised in paragraph 6.22 of the 2011 BIS White Paper; redesign the information landscape “in order to arrive at a new system that meets the needs of a wider group of users; reduces the duplication that currently exists, and results in timelier and more relevant data.”

 

On 1 August the Higher Education Data & Information Improvement Programme (HEDIIP) came into existence and I have been appointed Director of the programme.

 

We will be picking up the various strands of work that have already been started – development of a common data language, implementation of the ULN and creating a replacement for the JACS subject coding system. We have also just published the inventory of HE data collections which will help raise awareness of the totality of HE reporting and hopefully be used by data collectors and by HE providers to identify opportunities for standardisation and rationalisation.

The first meeting of the HEDIIP Programme Board takes place next week and we will be publishing more material on the web site during September.
