A Research Associate is required to develop and implement new methods to provide situational 
awareness capabilities in multimodal urban transport networks. The successful candidate will 
develop new methods to flexibility integrate and combine information from existing and emerging 
transport sensor systems (including social media) and to consistently propagate uncertainty 
through the data fusion process. A range of potential applications will be explored including those 
relating to the improved modelling of transport system performance, improved transport system 
management and control, and improved traveller information services.   

The work will form part of Cisco“s Future City research programme at Imperial College London 
and will be based principally in Imperial“s Centre for Transport Studies. The successful candidate 
will however, work closely with other members of the Cisco Future City research programme and 
with Cisco staff, based in Cisco“s Greenwich headquarters.   

The work will be undertaken under the supervision of Prof John Polak (Centre for Transport 
Studies) and Dr Julie McCann (Department of Computing). CTS is one of largest and most 
successful multidisciplinary transport research groups in Europe and is an acknowledged centre of 
excellence in the area of intelligent transport systems, with an especially strong track record in 
the areas of pervasive sensing, intelligent network management and control, traffic modelling and 
simulation, user behaviour and traveller information systems. The Department of Computing is 
one of the largest computing departments in the UK and is a world leader in academic research in 
computer science. Particular strengths related to this project are in the areas of distributed 
computing, adaptive embedded systems and big data processing as well as computing theory, AI 
and computational aspects of management science.   

Applicants should have or be very close to completing a PhD in a relevant area of transport 
network modelling and/or intelligent transport systems. Familiarity with data fusion methods, 
sensor network systems and a strong background in scientific programming is also highly 
desirable.   

The appointment will be for a fixed term of 24 months. Salary will be in the range £32,100 to 
£38,600 per annum.
