Centre for Sustainable Fashion at the University of the Arts London (UAL) together with Neal’s Yard seek to appoint a student to undertake a practice based PhD on Desire to Acquire (D2A) This PhD opportunity has grown through a collaboration between Neal’s Yard and Centre for Sustainable Fashion, based on shared ambitions around ‘Better Lives’ and a contribution towards ‘Ecological Resilience’. We seek a student to develop new knowledge in the field of Design for Sustainability through work relating to the research of Professor Helen Storey, whose world leading research has touched the lives of millions of people across the world. Building on this research is a new strand of design led interdisciplinary practice, which sets out to investigate and explore the relationship between us and our ‘ Desire to Acquire’, informed by, and with input from, neuroscience and psychology. The studentship will be based at Centre for Sustainable Fashion, a UAL research centre based at London College of Fashion, under the supervision of Professor Helen Storey, working with the centre’s expertise and that of its international partner institutions, as well as a specific collaborative relationship with MA Textiles, based at Chelsea College of Art and Design. The Centre for Sustainable Fashion and Neal’s Yard seek a student with experience in design led research, relating to fashion, with an interdisciplinary approach to research and practice and a deep interest in exploring the challenges of our current ways of living and working to evolve better ways for us to thrive as individuals, communities and societies. The successful candidate will have experience in engaging public audiences through the medium of fashion and an evolving understanding of design for sustainability. The PhD ‘ Desire to Acquire’ theme incorporates ‘live pilot studies’ as part of the dissemination process and so it is important that the work generates outputs which can be put towards campaigning activity for Better Lives through fashion, to be designed by the student, and in support of an identified and agreed action for change. The campaign and its accompanying action may include partner organisations from existing, or new networks relating to fashion and sustainability. Potential students should apply using the UAL application system. The application should contain a clearly defined proposal which outlines a potential subject within the broad parameters outlined above. This means articulating a clearly-defined research field; outlining key collections or works of arts and/or archive material which is available for study; submitting a bibliography. The successful applicant will be registered as a student at UAL and will follow the university’s methodologies training programme during the first year. Please note that the successful applicant will initially be enrolled for a Research Degree with the intention to complete as PhD and that Registration and Confirmation of the final degree path is dependent on approval by the UAL Research Degrees Sub-Committee and on satisfactory academic progress. The studentship will cover fees for three years full-time Research Degrees study with the intention to complete as PhD as well as a maintenance fee of £10,950 p.a.
