Two developments of interest to digital curators: 1) Screencasts on the Variable Media Questionnaire Unlike tools to document the current state of an artifact, the Variable Media Questionnaire captures information about how that artifact might change in the future. We've uploaded three new screencasts that give a hands-on feel for how to use this paradigm-shifting instrument: http://VariableMediaQuestionnaire.net/ These tutorials focus on essential philosophies and features of the third-generation VMQ, which is a free and open-source Web service anyone can use. The "Adding Records" screencast walks you through assembling a work from its Parts--that is, its most functional, medium-independent components. They also show how to use a new feature called Packages, which makes it easy to add records for common genres like Web sites or video games. 2) Tuition discounts for online Digital Curation classes For a limited time, international and out-of-state students can register for U-Me's Digital Curation online classes with a whopping discount. The curriculum spans the stages in the lifecycle of a digital work, from acquisition to representation to access to preservation. Students can cherrypick individual courses or apply to earn the entire 18-credit certificate online. The courses blend theory and practice; for example, last term several students applied tools like the VMQ to preserve actual artworks in real-world collections. Classes start the first week of September.
