The Environmental History of Derbyshire Soughs

Applications are invited for the above post based at the School of Geography, University of Nottingham. The School of Geography is one of the strongest both nationally and internationally and was ranked 6th in the UK on a measure of Research Power in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, and 'excellent' in the Higher Education Funding Council for England assessment of teaching provision. The successful candidate will be part of the School's Cultural and Historical Geography Research theme.

The successful candidate will be responsible for investigating the environmental history of water management in the former lead mining districts of Derbyshire and will conduct research into the historical and contemporary significance of Derbyshire's lead mining soughs (underground drainage channels).

Specific responsibilities will include historical archival work in a range of local, regional and national collections and liaising with and interviewing representatives of key organizations across Derbyshire. The role holder will be part of a broader team of individuals based at the Universities of Bristol and East Anglia working on an AHRC Care for the Future project "The Power and the Water: Connecting Pasts with Futures". The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with the team as a whole.

Applicants must have or be expected to gain a PhD (or equivalent) in Geography, History, History of Science, Environmental History or Archaeology (or an allied discipline/sub-discipline) and should be familiar with using unpublished, hand written archival material. Knowledge of interview and/or oral history methodologies is desirable.

This full-time post is available from 1 October 2013 will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 24 months.
