Medical Statistician
Faculty of Epidemiology & Population Health
Salary:   £36,018 to £40,904 Per annum
Closing Date:   Saturday 31 August 2013
We wish to appoint a good medical statistician, mainly to analyse a large and complex data set on lung cancer and mesothelioma. The data includes lifetime occupational histories on 1,500 mesotheliomas, 1.500 lung cancers, 1,420 population controls and 800 pneumothorax patients, plus (for a subset) asbestos fibre concentrations from lung samples.

The post-holder would analyse asbestos lung burdens in relation to occupational history and predict lifetime occupational and environmental mesothelioma risks due to current asbestos exposure levels. The post would also involve modelling time-dependent effects of occupational exposures on cancer risk.

The post-holder would also be involved in the follow-up of a cohort of approximately 50,000 women recruited as part of the cervical cancer national screening programme in 1988-1993 in Manchester.

There is the option of involvement in other studies such as a trial of Vitamin D and genetic modelling on breast cancer. As a Research Fellow, the post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching of epidemiological and/or statistical methods for our post-graduate students.

The successful applicant requires an aptitude for both applied and methodological research, good communication skills and statistical computing experience. An MSc in statistics or equivalent is essential and past experience of epidemiological research is desirable.

The successful applicant will be appointed on a part-time or full-time basis for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of extension depending on availability of funding. The appointment will be made on LSHTM’s research fellow scale (£36,018-£40,904 per annum inclusive), depending on qualifications and experience.
