An Introduction to Primary Care Databases
This is a three day course on primary care databases which
will take place from the 11th - 13th of November, 2013.
The course will provide an introduction to the analyses of data in
primary care
databases. Course participants will be taken through the different
elements
required for a successful study including
development of code lists, data management and survival analysis.
The course material is
developed around the analyses of The Health Improvement Network
(THIN) database, but
participants can easily adapt the analyses and data management tools
to other
data sources such as the CPRD. It is a practical course with a
mixture of short lectures and
hands-on computer based practical sessions using Stata (version 11
or higher).

Monday:
- Introduction to
Electronic Health Records research
- Finding your way
around Primary Care Data
- Basic Stata
programming for large datasets
Tuesday:
- Developing code
lists using Stata
- How to calculate
incidence rates
- Incidence
interpretation
- Linking Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) to
Primary Care Databases
Wednesday:
- Assembling a data file for statistical analysis
- Epidemiological study designs
- Confounding is still an issue
- Statistical analysis of a data file
