As far as I'm aware psci-com's been like this for at least a couple of years. This is a message I sent back in 2010 which contains a link to an earlier archived message within it, which obviously I found within the archives themselves :)

If anyone is thinking "Hmm, I'd rather that email I sent six years ago wasn't public" please let me know and I'll do my best to delete it for you* - but please be patient, I'm on a week away with work colleagues and wifi is a bit unpredictable. Look for the Search Archives box here and find your old emails and everyone else's https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=psci-com

I recommend sending requests to deletion to me at [log in to unmask] rather than to list!

Note that the RSS output from the messages (subject + a link to the post on the list's archives) also goes to @psci_com on Twitter. I set this up for myself about a year ago and then took over the running of the list in the late Autumn (in case you think I took over the list and then changed all the settings without telling you, I didn't).

*because replies often incorporate the message it can be difficult to expunge information entirely because it's not really appropriate to delete other people's messages without their sayso, but will see what I can do. Plus there is always the Wayback Machine which means most things are findable. We were first archived in 2011 but that archive includes posts from the 1990s and I can't delete anything that's on the Wayback Machine.

Dear subscribers

We've had a lot of queries recently about the availability and visibility of JISCMail list archives in Google.

This is just a reminder that messages sent to a list with public archives will be available to anyone on the internet.

Your email will not be visible to non-subscribers, but remember if you reply to the list there may be information in your message which will be visible, such as your signature or attachments.

This list is configured with public archives.

JISCMail public list data has been available to search engines for many years.  List owners choose whether their archives are public or private, so if you have any queries about whether a list should have public archives, then contact the list owner (see http://bit.ly/ContactListOwner for details).

Public list archives are an important and useful source of information to the communities that we support, they enable wider collaboration across educational research, learning, teaching and support networks and encourage new members.

We hope this makes the situation clearer.
