The Institute of Physics would like to invite you to a Lecture given by Professor Emanuel Derman.
Models Behaving Badly
Why confusing illusion with reality can lead to disasters on Wall Street and in life.
Date: Wednesday 10th July 2013
Venue: Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London, W1B 1NT
Time: 18.30 (registration from 18.00)
“For better or worse, humans worry about what’s ahead. Deep inside, everyone recognises that the purpose of building models and creating theories is divination: foretelling the future, and controlling it.”
In this lecture Emanuel Derman will be talking about his experiences in both the financial and physics world while exploring the collision between human needs and desires, mathematical modelling and economics that has featured so dramatically in the recent financial crisis.
The full details about the lecture and speaker, who is from Columbia University and Head of Risk at Prisma Capital Partners, can be found in this pdf.
The
lecture is free to attend and is open to all, physicists and
non-physicists alike, so please feel free to pass this invitation on to
your colleagues, relatives, students or anyone else whom you think would
be interested.
Places are limited, so for those wishing to attend, please register online at,

We look forward to seeing you there.
Kind Regards,
Angela Townsend
