Thanks, everyone who signed the call for a General Meeting on this subject. We easily reached the necessary hundred signatures and I submitted it to Annie Mauger, Chief Executive Officer of CILIP, on Friday afternoon, who tells me she will respond next week.
I'll publicise the time and date as soon as it's known. May I ask everyone who signed or has taken part in the debate here and elsewhere, to do their utmost to attend and contribute, and to encourage others to?

Rebranding in this case is not about rebranding at all. It’s actually about failure to brand in the first place. There is nothing in the name Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals that isn’t self-explanatory and as Sheila says, “fits the bill as well as, if not better than, anything new one might come up with”. CILIP as an acronym is less self-explanatory.  But there is no reason to chuck the baby out with the bath water. For those of us of a certain age, we’ve been through this before (and this is not our fate, so let’s not talk falsely now etc etc) and don’t want a repeat because it’s a waste of time, resources and will ultimately end up with a load (and I mean a load) of disgruntled librarians hiving off to form ALIS or LISA or even The Alt LA!

The two things that CILIP must concentrate on (and I really hope they are reading this) are:

1.      Immediately start promoting the invaluable work of CILIP members to the wider world

2.      Stop faffing around trying to invent a new name when there’s nothing wrong with this one BUT perhaps, as Charles said earlier,  devising a good strapline that will reinforce the name and purpose of the Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals. Something like CILIP for Info Library Professionals

3.      Maybe devise a new, stronger logo – if you need to spend money do it on that.

Jane’s position regarding “Library” in the name of our professional body applies to those doing the sort of work I do, also.

In my mind, librarians are a sub-set of information professionals. I understand why librarians are very keen to keep the L-word in the name of the professional body, and feel that, while it has its difficulties, “CILIP” fits the bill as well as, if not better than, anything new one might come up with.

Having lived through the LA-IIS merger, I have a strong sense of déjà vu here. I must be getting old …

Hi

Well Libraries could be considered a sub-set of information resources, the library is just a means to obtaining it. So why sideline Information in the Professional body name?

Personally, I do not see Information Professionals as being a sub-set of Librarians, but as different groups working in the same field, and therefore should both be represented in the name of our joint professional body, as they are now. You would not call a Nurse, a Firefighter, yet both are part of the Emergency services profession.

I do not have a Library Degree, I do not work in a Library (well ok I currently work in an office off a Library, and am in the same department, but that is more due to available office space), so why should I have to explain to the average Joe, that my professional organisation is more obviously for another profession? And when the inevitably reply oh you are a Librarian, and then have to explain that I am not.
