The LIRG Student Award for 2011 for best dissertation went to Thomas Muggleton, a student at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Strathclyde University, for his study entitled The effect of homelessness on information access, identity formation and social interaction. The judges commented:

"An original piece of research that has relevance to the profession and has practical application"

The LIRG Student Award for 2012 for best dissertation went to Timothy Lowe, a student on the MA Library and Information Management at Northumbria University.  The dissertation was entitled – The role played by public libraries in the provision of library services for the visually impaired in the London area. The judges commented

 “It used a variety of research methods, involved both librarian and service user perspectives and was applicable to practice in both public libraries and other sectors.  All these factors made this a worthy winner.”

The LIRG Research Award for 2011 went to Hannah Rose and Gillian Siddal, both Academic Librarians at the University of Northampton, for their research project entitled An investigation into the use of reading lists as a pedagogical tool to support the development of information skills amongst Foundation Degree students. The judges commented:

"A very polished proposal - an under-studied and topical subject, relevant to LIRG’s aims."

The LIRG Scan Award 2012/13 winners - Helen Buckley Woods and Andrew Booth, Scharr, University of Sheffield. Their presentation is followed by a debate “What do LIS practitioners want from research?” chaired by Alison Brettle - Salford University
