Dear all

Thanks to those who have already forwarded me responses to the questions below. I have not really had enough yet to make any kind of meaningful analysis. If any of you that have not replied could spare the time to do so before 21 June I would be really grateful.

I will be happy to share an analysis of my findings with the group before 31 July.

All best wishes

Jane

Subject: English Language and Writing Development for home students - your views sought

Dear all

Thank you for your welcome to the LDHE list. I am new to learning development after a long career in teaching English to Speakers of other Languages and Sociology, and latterly in Academic Professional Development .

In my new role at De Montfort University I am working on a project which is interrogating the English Language and Writing Development needs of home students (i.e. all non-international students - the Centre for English Language Learning at DMU provides classes and support for international students). I am also be considering different models of delivery to meet those needs. Although the main focus of the enquiry is DMU I would very much appreciate an insight into what happens in other institutions so I would be grateful for your responses to the following questions.

1 How is English Language and academic writing development for international students organised in your institution?

2 How is English Language and academic writing development organised for home students?

3 Is there a particular model that underpins this organisation and/or your practice? eg 'study skills', 'academic socialisation', 'academic literacies' ? (Lea M & Street B, 1998)

4 Is there any organisational relationship between the support for home students and the support for international students? eg, same school or faculty, sharing of expertise and/or resources, /completely separate

5 Please list up to three things in your institution that work particularly well in the organisation and delivery of English Language support and Writing Development for home students.

I look forward to reading your responses.

Thanks and best wishes

Jane
