I'd imagine there wouldn't be an issue with an extensive marked out and referenced quotation from any of those sources, though obviously it's polite to ask. We have to get out of the habit of thinking that we're talking about an academic student essay!

So some general introduction to the topic, then competing definitions as extended quotes, then perhaps some of the theoretical frameworks LD people use (with links), and something about LD as a profession including links to ALDinHE and JLDHE (in the UK) and the variety of roles and institutional positions LDers have in HE (if that's where the focus is going to be).

Dear all

I couldn't resist adding to this thread. The library community have been looking to improve entries on Wikipedia and are looking to edit the term information literacy as it's currently very US centric.

In terms of copyright - material put on Wikipedia is licensed under a creative commons licence now. So don't add content that is someone else's without asking if they are happy with the licence terms.
It's a great idea though. Wikipedia are always looking for expert editors.

Sorry, I meant that we might need permission if we literally used/copied/repurposed one of those actual texts as the first upload – obviously if I/we started anew we’d just reference them as normal.

Normally I'd be the first person to agree that you need to know who your audience are before writing, but with a general encyclopaedia, surely that's impossible to judge?

In terms of it being a lot of work, I'm sure there are definitions that have already had a lot of work put into them (on the ALDinHE website? In the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education? In the intro to Hartley et al (2010), Learning Development in Higher Education ?) that could act as a starting text - then the whole point of a wiki is to refine and revise.

I think it's an excellent project.

A Wikipedia entry is probably not a bad idea, but before going ahead, who is it for?
Who do we want as a reader of the entry, or who do we think we’ll get as readers?
And what is the purpose – could possibly be a lot of work goes into it, but for what outcome?
I’m not for a moment suggesting that you don’t do it, just raising a few questions before we all jump in.
