George Watt Prize, 2013

 

Graduate and undergraduate students from the United States and elsewhere are invited to submit an essay or thesis chapter about any aspect of the Spanish Civil War, the global political or cultural struggles against fascism in 1920s and 1930s, or the lifetime histories and contributions of the Americans who fought in support of the Spanish Republic from 1936 to 1938. Two prizes of $250 each will be awarded, one in the undergraduate and one in the graduate category. Work will be judged on the basis of originality, quality of research, and effectiveness of argument or presentation.

Please note the following contest guidelines: 

            • Submissions must be between 3,500 and 7,500 words;

            • Submissions may be in Spanish or English;

            • Submissions must have been produced to fulfill an undergraduate or graduate course or degree requirement (please specify course, degree, and institution; for thesis chapters, please  add a thesis abstract);

            • Any work produced since January 2012 is eligible for the competition.

            • Deadline: The submission deadline is July 1, 2013.

Interested candidates may send an email quoting in the subject line:  ““Watt Prize, 2013” to [log in to unmask] by July 1, 2013.  The application should include the following information: a title page with name, address, e-mail, and telephone number, and email entries in MS Word or PDF format ALBA’s Executive Committee appoints the jury. Award winners will be announced at the end of July. Winning essays are published on the ALBA website, www.alba-valb.org and an excerpt of the essay is published on ALBA’s quarterly magazine, The Volunteer.


Premio de Ensayo Guerra Civil Española 

Premio “George Watt” 2013

ALBA (Los Archivos de la Brigada Abraham Lincoln, EE.UU) anuncia su concurso de ensayo anual para estudiantes de licenciatura, maestría y doctorado. Se invitan ensayos o capítulos de tesis sobre cualquier aspecto de la Guerra Civil Española, sobre la lucha mundial antifascista de los años 20 y 30 en sus dimensiones culturales o políticas, o sobre los voluntarios estadounidenses que participaron en la defensa de la República española entre 1936 y 1938. El concurso se divide en dos categorías: estudiantes de licenciatura y estudiantes de maestría o doctorado. Se otorgará al menos un premio de 250 dólares en cada una. Los ensayos se evaluarán en base a su calidad de investigación, además de la originalidad y efectividad de los argumentos presentados.

Las normas del concurso son las siguientes:

            • El texto sometido debe tener una extensión mínima de 3.500 y máxima de 7.500 palabras;

            • Se aceptan textos redactados en inglés o castellano;

            • Sólo se considerarán ensayos o capítulos de tesis producidos para cumplir un requisito universitario (especificar curso y universidad; para capítulos de tesis, favor de agregar un  resumen de la misma);

            • Se considerará todo trabajo realizado desde enero de 2012;

            • La fecha de entrega es el 1 de julio de 2013.
