I am very pleased to announce the publication of "Theorizing Improvisation (Musically)," six essays and a response, in Music Theory Onlinehttp://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.13.19.2/toc.19.2.html.

The essays came from a joint AMS/SEM/SMT panel on improvisation in New Orleans (fall 2012). August Sheehy and Paul Steinbeck contribute from the perspective of music theory, Julie Cumming and Roger Moseley from historical musicology, and Bruno Nettl and Laudan Nooshin from ethnomusicology. Sheehy and Steinbeck also provide an introduction to the essays, and George Lewis, whose distinguished work crosses many disciplinary boundaries, provides critical responses.

List subscribers might also take this opportunity to review the full range of offerings in MTO, dating back to our first issue in 1993—all available from the contents page: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/issues.htmlMTO is an open-access peer-reviewed journal published by the Society for Music Theory.
