I shall have to give this one a miss as the deadlines are a bit soon, and I will
not be ready to submit my thesis until at least October, not that it technically
matters because I have the same research abilities plus or minus a doctorate.
I do have to quibble however. I know that Leeds is ultimately part of the
machine, and that these things are set in stone, but I would have hoped that the
discipline of disability studies could have bucked the trend at least a little
and couched this kind of opportunity in more realistic and disability friendly
prose. It shows that you all have a lot learn about the world of neurodiversity
anyway and the way in which opportunity is potentially stifled by normative
paradigms.
What would you regard as “evidence of internationally excellent publication
potential” other than serving ones masters in the media circus of commercial
academic journals rather than anything real and challenging in the up and coming
world of open access publication I wonder? I personally do not doubt that I
have interplanetary potential, however no-one is listening beyond the moon it
seems, and that is where I am destined, because I do wonder whether I belong on
the same earth sometimes. (There is a Victor Hugo, or at least a Charles
Laughton citation, manqué there)
Another time perhaps when I am a bit closer to retirement and don’t have to
worry about benefits traps.

*Subject:* Postdoc research fellow - job opportunity at Leeds
Dear friends
I’m delighted to advertise the opportunity for an outstanding postdoctoral
researcher to join our disability studies team at Leeds, to support research in
the disability policy field and to develop their own research profile over a
12-15 month period.
The key criterion is one of academic excellence in the field, relevant to the
candidate’s career stage, for which evidence of internationally excellent
academic publications is expected (this might include a recently published
monograph from a PhD thesis or peer reviewed journal papers for example).
The post is a fixed term career development opportunity but presents the
opportunity to participate in grant writing for future projects that might
extend the work beyond this time frame.
There is a web link at the bottom of this message for full details.
Best wishes
Mark Priestley
Professor of Disability Policy
Centre for Disability Studies
University of Leeds
*Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Law *
*School of Sociology and Social Policy *
*Research Fellow (Centre for Disability Studies) *
**
*Fixed term until 31 December 2014 (to start on or before 1 October by negotiation)*
You will work within the Centre for Disability Studies to support the Professor
of Disability Policy and to develop research in that field. You may also
contribute to a small amount of teaching and/or supervision activity at
different levels in areas relevant to the School’s programmes.
With a relevant doctorate and evidence of internationally excellent publication
potential, you will support the delivery of funded research projects and the
development of new ones. You will possess excellent analytical and writing
skills and the ability to deal with a variety of tasks to agreed deadlines.
The ability to work alone, as part of a team and with a range of people, is
essential, along with strong organisational skills. Some limited travel or stays
away from home may be required, for example to attend national or international
research meetings/conferences or for research fieldwork.
