Dear Dr Deb:  I joined academia.edu some time ago, specifically to get .pdf access without joining social media.  (We archaeo-malacologists often post our .pdf files on our pages, rather like physicists use arxive.)

There is a 'sign up' button on the home-page, or top right on almost all the other pages.  Below the big blue rectangle with the happy label about Facebook (put up because they assume it's the most convenient method: they are based in San Fransisco, after all), there is a series of input bars for registering with the usual identification (name, email address) including a unique password for signing in which you define for yourself (they check it's unique).  This takes you to a unique page for yourself.  Adding stuff to this page (a photo, a description, your .pdf papers, joining interest groups) is easy once you have signed in using your unique password.  Even I can do it.

(These people should pay me.)

Subject: Re: [ZOOARCH] Pig mandible problem

Dear Umberto: Thank you very much for giving some help on the wild vs.
domestic pig thing. I have the Payne & Bull, and would like to look at
your posted & downloadable papers, but unfortunately they all appear to be
tied up somehow with Facebook -- I refuse to be on what they call "social
media". They won't let you download any paper unless you sign up to be on
Facebook! Horrors! Is there any other route to download any of them? Sorry
to be such a privacy-loving auld curmudgeon. Cheers -- Dr. Deb
