There are bits of compiled code in SPM (the mex files). The developers cannot compile code for all possible combinations of OS and Matlab. The message implies a 5 year old version of Matlab running on a 32bit version of Linux. You will need to try compiling SPM yourself (look in the src folder) or upgrade to new software.
