so, having straightened out one problem, can you tell us how your son's "misuses" of words would "destroy the designer" ?

dear chua,

i am curious what makes my view of language seem suspect to you.

in my response to birger sevaldson, i tried to clarify my earlier comment and wrote that "language is the primary human artifact. it has a very long history to which almost every human being has made albeit miniscule creative contributions. and it is the medium by which we coordinate our activities, including utilizing sounds, movements, and matter available in our surroundings."

how does this differ from your post? -- except for one claim of yours that your son's "misuses" of words would "destroy the designer."

can you elaborate?

klaus

Why should you defer to Klaus' views on language, which seems to me suspect? Language is partly inherited, but also partly designed, shaped, modified. The oxford dictionary adds new words all the time, and Gunther Kress, precisely on the basis of our Design of word-signs, appeals for a new semiotics. My son misuses, and hence rehapes words to mean what he intends to communicate all the time, and by and by, his education will make him a sign user, and destroy the designer.

Hi Klause

I would defer to your understanding of language. I have an ongoing interest in how imagination-images-and language interact in the design process (inquiry and action). Sometime over a beer I would like to talk with you about design as capacitation and design as communication and how they are connected.

Harold
