Hi all

Struggling to get my head round the precedences in pFACT and I wondered if anyone can help.

Here is our situation:

In Setups\Cost Setups\Payscale, we have Researcher Grade 7, Charge Type = Directly Incurred.

In Setups\Staff\Staff Type, we have Principal Investigator, Category = Directly Allocated.

One of our costing staff tried to add a staff member on the Researcher Grade 7 payscale, as a PI. The staff member came through on the project costs as Directly Allocated.

This makes sense, I can see from the pasted bit below of section 2.20 of the System Administrators Guide that:

Where both Staff Role and Category hold a Charge type, the Charge Type in the Staff Role will take precedence.

After this though, the coster went into the Final Adjustments screen, clicked on Role - Name, and changed the Charge Type to Directly Incurred. They are confused about why, in one of the Project Financial reports, that staff member still comes up as Directly Allocated.

Looking again at the Manual, the only bit of help I could find is as below:

2.17.1 Default Charge Types for Staff, Facilities/Equipment and Non-staff
Staff Charge Type allows a final back-stop charge type to be applied to all Staff costs, over-ridden by definitions in payscales, Income templates, funder records and final adjustments.
The most likely option (most common - Directly incurred?) should be selected
Similarly, defaults for Facilities /Equipment and Non-staff should be selected here

In my head, Final Adjustments should override everything else, and that seems to fit with the statement above (as I understand it?!). But that is not what we are seeing happen with the particular costing I've described.

It could well be an error that we are trying to make a PI a directly incurred cost anyway. But in the meantime, I'd like to make sure I understand how the system's precedence is working - does anyone have any idea as to what's going on with this?

Thanks

Lauren
