Hi Susan

Noticed this the other day when I was looking for something else; thought it might be handy for reference purposes? I'd hazard a guess that the team didn't do a risk assessment before introducing these workers? https://osha.europa.eu/en/publications/factsheets/64

Thanks Karen and Anna

It looks like I am going to have to write a consent process for both referral and for vaccinations of 16 year olds and enrol all my staff into the Trust’s consent training….

They will just have to wait for me to finish before I give them an appointment…. That will make them think about changing the process without conferring with me.. (yeah right)

The following website has info on consent for young people http://www.hse.gov.uk/youngpeople/about.htm on the basis of a risk assessment. Also other useful legal information.

I have seen consent forms used for 16 year old apprentices in industry to consent for occupational health assessments and health surveillance, signed by their parents. Can’t help on the vaccination side as I don’t have that knowledge – hopefully someone on the list will have.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Employing Under 18 year olds

Hi Guys

I have an issue that strangely I have never had to deal with. Consent and authority to screen, vaccinate and occupational health assess a 16 year old.

A situation has been sprung on me with the employment of apprentices  under 18 that has never occurred here. Because we deal with patient under 18, it has not been deemed appropriate for them to have their ‘juniors’ in positions of power or authority.

Someone decided to jump on the apprenticeship wagon and without discussion we have had a 16 referred to us for poor attendance (30 days out of their first 35 days of employment).

We would not even normally particularly do the math to work out age precisely unless there was a reason.

My concern apart from the lack of discussion is consent when we have not had under 18 consent training, is there an age issue in the exemption to the medicines act that we vaccinate under. Do you have to have paeds training to vaccinate a ‘child’ etc.

Anyone had to resolve this before that can reassure me.

Regards

Sue
