Did you mean pre employment Tracey or once they have been appointed...but yes alcohol and drug testing is done regularly, mandatory and by OH (who else) in safety critical roles eg train driver.

Hi. I am surprised to hear OH being involved with alcohol testing post employment. . I have always been advised to stay clear and leave to HR as it can muddy the waters of confidentiality etc. putting OH in a difficult position.

It's so good to have an expert like Helen available on Jiscmail.(as it is with Chris for skin issues!)
Just another reason why this is a great resource.
I am quite happy using a  breathalyser for alcohol at present.
Kind regards

I believe the device is from/branded as TruTouch where they monitor transdermal alcohol i.e. sweat vapour.  I am not aware of any UK company using this yet.  I have contact details of the UK rep if the group are interested.

Many companies in Africa allow their staff a free alcohol test outside the gates.  If they fail they can call in sick and be deducted a day’s pay.  If they choose to enter the site the are likely to be tested as the percentage of breath tests is high.

Hope there are no alcohol sanitizers close-by.

The ankle bracelet is SCRAMx, now available in the UK

Could  this be linked to the “ankle bracelet” that is being tried on offenders who have a no alcohol order against them? I understand that can pick up readings from the skin / sweat.

Hi List
I have been asked to look at the practicalities of using a fingerprint device to detect alcohol in workers.

Has anyone come across this or used it?

Introduction is - Routine alcohol testing at work could be on the way with the introduction of a fingerprint device that gives results in eight seconds. The AlcoSense device is described as "a 100% non-invasive, touch based measurement" which uses near infra-red to measure alcohol intoxication "without breath or body fluids". The company actively promotes the use of the device for "testing in the workplace every day" and it has been reported this is already commonplace in many US workplaces.

Further information is in the following link http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/work-blog/2013/apr/23/workplace-alochol-testing-employees

Would be grateful for anyone who has any experience of this gadget.

Thanks
Karen
