PhD Studentship, Glasgow and London: ‘British Film Music of the Twentieth 
Century: the Legacy of Muir Mathieson’

The University of Glasgow’s School of Culture and Creative Arts and the 
British Library in London are pleased to announce a three-year PhD 
Studentship under the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) Scheme, 
to commence 1 October 2013. This PhD will focus on the extraordinary legacy 
of Scottish composer, conductor and musical director Muir Mathieson 
(1911-75), whose monumental contribution to British soundtracks, across 
several film and TV genres from the early 1930s to the ‘70s, earned him the 
nickname ‘Tsar of music for British films’. The studentship offers full 
funding and an interdisciplinary supervisory team drawn from both
