Part-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant (2 posts)

Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, University of Oxford, Le Gros Clark Building, South Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: Salary in the range £29,541- £35,244 p.a. (pro rata)

We require two part-time (18.75 hours per week) researchers (postdoctoral or equivalent) for six months to work on a web-based collection of microscope slide collections of Sir Charles Sherrington and Sir Wilfred Le Gros Clark which will be hosted on a publically available virtual microscopy website called CSlide.

You will identify and collate relevant resources from the department, the Bodleian, and elsewhere, scan and upload original materials, and attach appropriate metadata to enable cross-linking and searching (such as dates, geographical locations). You will write material which places slides in their historical context and provides a summary of the appropriate aspects of each of the creators’ lives. You will provide non-technical input to the on-going design and development of CSlide; and engage in on-going publicity for the project using appropriate means, including social media such as Twitter and Facebook

You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in the history of science and a publication record in your field. You will demonstrate excellent technical skills and experience of working on your own initiative. Experience of the history of anatomy/neuroanatomy research, using social media to document/disseminate research, and of contributing to web databases to document relationships between historical materials would be an advantage.

The posts are funded by the Wellcome Trust Research Resources in Medical History Award for six months, and will be based in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Le Gros Clark Building, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QX. An early start date is required.
