medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear medieval-religion colleagues,

Over the course of several months, the remains of Pope Celestine V have been examined, and a new funerary mask has been created.

Among the talking points:

1) confirmation (not for the first time) that the hole in his skull was made after his death, and so he definitely was not murdered, according to legend, by having a nail driven into his skull; and

2) a careful study was done of his cranium, leading them to come up with an idea of what he looked like. Get this: his face does not look the way the investigators imagined he would look (especially as his appearance was of a man in his 50s rather than his later 80s) so the mask is more an artistic impression of how a holy old man should appear. So, yet again, despite the scientific work done in this case, humanity reveals its interest in letting ideas and fantasy prevail over reality.
