Just to put my two pennyworth, this is what I feel about various words that could be used:

Chartered - yes; we have a Royal Charter and that should be reflected in the title

Institute/Institution - better than "Association" which sounds vague and could apply to a collection of corporate bodies.  Institutes are almost invariably professional associations.

Library -  I am sure that most members have "Library" or "Librarian" somewhere in their job title

Information - yes, that is what we all handle one way or another

Professional/Manager/Management - this is what we regard ourselves as

UK - definitely not - membership is drawn from all over the world

Adding all these together, I can see absolutely no reason for changing the title we currently have.  If we do change the title, there is the palaver and cost of amending the Royal Charter, changing headed notepaper, everyone changing their postnominal letters (Fellow of Information UK goes to FIUK - who wants that??), changing URLs, changing the logo, changing the journal name, etc., etc.

So I repeat:  why do we need to change the name at all?

Now what I would like to see debated are proposals for an effective, powerful strap line......

I was thinking *exactly* the same thing. Having done the CILIP members' survey I now feel very, very depressed. The phrase "when you're in a hole stop digging" springs to mind.

Does anyone else have a bad feeling about the CILIP re-branding exercise? The names they are consulting on are ludicrous.
