No problem, Phil. I figured that's what you meant!

"Hmm, much as I don't like to rush in as a non-member, didn't Phil mean that the word library isn't in CILIP as in the word library is clearly not 'in' CILIP (CILIP only has five letters for a start!). So whereas 'The Library Association' clearly has 'Library' up front and visible, CILIP does not. That's what I understood it to mean anyway, not that the 'L' doesn't stand for library."
Thanks Ian - that's exactly correct. It's one of those things - I knew what I meant, and more haste less speed, but I'm happy to apologise for not having been more precise in the blog post.
Phil.

Speaking as a non-member, this sort of hair-splitting is not going to encourage me to join. I have my own views on all this which I think I stated earlier in this thread. I have to say, however, that I wish this many folk got worked up about library closures and hollowing out of the service...there's barely a peep on this list when a raft of library closures are announced yet when there is a CILIP re-brand... (not to say I don't agree with the stands that are being taken, I think Tom is to be applauded for his response, but it is interesting to note.)

From Phil Bradley's blog - "Before I move on however, I'd like to just work through a few more thoughts and comments on the use of Library/Librarian in the organisation's title. There's been criticism that if it's not included, a group of members will feel excluded. I feel that I really do however need to point out that it's not included in the current name 'CILIP' - though it's obviously in the strapline. That doesn't mean that their importance or value can or should be overlooked however, but I think it's worth stressing that the strapline we use in any newly named organisation is almost as important as the name itself."

Surely the president of the organisation ought to know what its name is? I know executives often like to say that they don't do detail, but couldn't somebody have told him?

From the Royal Charter:

"AND WHEREAS it has been represented unto Us that the Association seeks with others to unite all persons engaged or interested in library work and information science for the purpose of promoting the development of libraries and information services and the advancement of information science for the public benefit and to that end the Association has resolved to change its name to the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals."

It isn't a "strapline", Phil, it's the name of the organisation. Library is there for a reason, it wasn't tagged on to a "strapline" as an afterthought.

More from Phil's blog: "It's also worth pointing out that it's a minority of CILIP members who use 'Library' or 'Librarian' in their job role (from a survey of members in 2012)."

Apart from the fact that a minority of library workers are Cilip members, that the respondents were self-selecting and not random so the sample is not representative of the profession, and that job titles are not voluntary, the spreading extinction of the names library and librarian is a symptom of deprofessionalisation and the downgrading of the profession of librarian, which Cilip has done little to stop. Hardly something for the president to be announcing with apparent approval. If Cilip's self-satisfied inertia continues it will eventually be a minority of public libraries that remain open, but that will hardly be a good argument for rebranding Cilip as the Illiteracy Promotion Institute.

Before you move on, Phil, take a look at these figures:

Cilip membership:

2011 = 16014

2010 = 17303

2009 = 17634

2008 = 18490

2007 = 19206

 LA membership:

1997 = more than 25000

 Is there any evidence that this endless decline is due to branding concerns, rather than advocacy and representation failure and an inappropriate fee structure - giving too little for too much?

 Cheers, Aran Lewis.

I agree with this sentiment. Whenever I mention CILIP, I add for clarity
that it's the old Library Association. Whilst not wanting to disrespect The
Institute of Information Scientists,

I think The Library Association does what it says on the tin.

Librarians have always been about bringing communities together around
learning. Whether authors to readers or locals with each other, the Library
Association did a great job of promoting that vision. It remains a
recognised brand. As new technology arrived librarians working with it
tried to distance themselves from librarians working with the old
(...um...books, that is), the Association splintered, and librarians have
been struggling to be recognised ever since. I believe librarianship has a
pivotal role to play in our future digital communities however. Anyone
whose profession is managing behaviour to capture knowledge, or enabling
effective access to, storage of, and disposal of information, accelerates
humanity's progress. We need to take the 'Library' word and invest it with
all the potential the information management profession can muster; to turn
the shushing stereotype into a respected and hip brand anyone even loosely
associated with the profession will aspire to. The Library Association.
Recognised, retro, respected and right on.
