The annual UK Health Literacy Network conference is taking place at Keele University, Staffordshire on 20th September 2013.
The steering committee for this year's conference invites you to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations on the conference theme: 'Health literacy: Healthy Living'. Deadline for abstract submission is 5.00pm on 31st May 2013; those applicants who have abstracts accepted will be notified at the end of June.
Submissions can be of research, research in progress, programmes of work/interventions, innovative practice -whether in initial stages of exploration or completed.
Guidelines for submission of abstracts are as follows:
Abstracts must include:
o Title: Provide a title of 15 words or less
o Type:
o Research - oral presentation or poster presentation
o Innovations in practice - oral or poster presentation
Oral presentations will be given a 15 min slot (10 mins talk plus 5 mins questions); poster presentations will be manned by the presenter.
o Authors and Institute of affiliation: Initials of first name(s) followed by surname(s) -
o Content: The abstract word limit is 500 words. The content and structure depends on the type of presentation you choose to submit. See below for guidelines.

A. Research papers for oral or poster presentation
Abstracts on academic work in progress (poster) or completed (poster/oral presentation) must demonstrate academic rigour and so establish trustworthiness of the reported findings. But we will also be looking for you to communicate why your work matters - to a mixed audience, academic, education and clinical. Your abstract should detail:
* Title.
* Author(s) details (name and affiliation).
The Problem: what is the problem you're tackling, why did you do this work
The approach: what did you do
Findings: what did you find
Consequences: What it means/why it matters
B. Innovations in practice
These presentations provide an opportunity to present current practice in improving health literacy (such as Skilled for Health) or practice intended to take account of variable health literacy in the population (such as specifically designed health information leaflets). What is important is that they are interesting and have the potential to change the way we think and work. They could be ideas for research, education, health care practice or policy.
Your abstract should include:
* Title.
* Presenter(s) details (name and affiliation).
The idea: describe your innovative idea
Why it matters: Why is (was) it necessary? How will it make a difference?
Next steps: what you are doing or need to do now to translate/disseminate this idea
Risks: A critical consideration of the risks involved?
HOW ARE ABSTRACTS ASSESSED FOR INCLUSION IN THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME?
All submissions will be independently assessed by two members of the Conference Scientific Committee (CSC). All abstracts will be assessed on the following criteria:
* Submissions are received on time and in the required format (see instructions for preparation).
* That the abstract is of relevance to health literacy research or innovations in practice.
* Spelling, grammar and English are satisfactory, and the abstract does not exceed the word limit.
The CSC has the final decision on the inclusion of abstracts. There may be more abstracts submitted for oral presentations than there are available slots within the programme. If this occurs, the CSC will judge which submissions to include as oral or poster presentations. This judgment requires balancing the ideal programme with the abstracts submitted and their relevance to the conference theme.
