Hello Laura
As Carina says, it’s often a slow drip branding and
marketing process that raises the profile of a learning development service across
its university and makes sure that resources are used. At Leeds all our students
have regular Personal Tutorials which ensure they have access to academic,
personal and pastoral support, which I guess happens in most universities. Our Personal
Tutorial programme is underpinned by the ‘Leeds
for Life’ initiative where tutors and students are encouraged to work
through an online pro forma, with key questions which should be addressed at
different stages of the student life cycle. So, at the first personal tutorial
meeting during an induction period students will be asked if they are aware of
the Skills@Library online resources and if they say no, a hyperlink on the web
forms takes them to our ‘For Students’ resources. This continues
throughout each degree level, so students returning from work experience will
be asked how they feel about returning to academic study, with a link to the
Skills@Library resources if they suggest they are concerned about essay writing
or referencing etc.
I think this link between the Personal Tutorial process and online
academic skills resources is a really useful way of ensuring that both staff
and student are continually made aware of the resources we produce and how to
access them. It might be worth finding out if you have a similar approach to
Personal Tutorials at Nottingham and making sure that your service is well
represented at this point. Its a bit of joined up thinking which has certainly generated
awareness of our workshop programme and online resources here at Leeds .
All the best
Julia

That looks like a great resource Carina – the question I
have is how do you direct students to the site? We have study skills resources
online here, but sometimes the biggest challenge is to get the support of
colleagues across the University to point students to them.
A question to the group also; how important do you think
subject-specific study skills support is in regards to content which can be
delivered centrally?
Best wishes,
Laura

You're
welcome to look at ours! http://mycourse.solent.ac.uk/succeed is open access and
available under a creative commons license (for details of use I think it's on
the FAQ page). It covers everything you mentioned and is being added to further
over the summer.
best wishes,
Carina

Hi all,
UWS is currently updating its resource bank. Instead of (please
excuse cliché use) 'reinventing the wheel', I was wondering if any of you could
recommend Creative Commons sites, which cover topics such as:
Critical thinking/writing/reading
Reflection/reflective writing
Academic writing, specifically lit reviews
Paraphrasing/synthesising
Research skills
Exam Technique
Thanks in advance,
Dickson.
