Please disseminate among your contacts. Best wishes, David *** Apologies for cross posting *** The Eastern England Hub of the sigma Network for cross-university Maths and Statistics Support invites you to the following event: Introduction to SPSS: Boot Camp *Wednesday* 12th June 2013, at University Campus Suffolk Background Statistics and quantitative data analysis techniques are increasingly used in "non-mathematical" disciplines such as the social sciences and humanities, as well as in the STEM subjects. This places an increasing demand on tutors, lecturers and learning assistants who support students in this area, either through in-course tutorials or through maths support centres or other central academic skills provision. The sigma Network for cross-university Maths and Statistics Support has facilitated a number of events recently that focused on the specific provision of statistics support to non-specialist students. This event now addresses an emerging need on the part of maths support tutors who might be less confident with statistics than other areas of mathematics and numeracy, namely how to use (and support students to use) the popular statistical software package SPSS. The course This intensive one-day hands-on course will provide instruction and reflection on the use of SPSS for statistical analysis, starting at the very beginning and going as far as we can go in the time available! It will be ideal for you if: * You support students needing to carry out simple statistical analysis; * You are familiar with standard introductory statistical methods (descriptive stats and graphs; correlation & regression; significance testing - chi-squared and t-tests); * You might already know how to implement some of the above using Excel or other packages; * BUT.... You have NOT used SPSS before and would like to add this to your armoury of skills, in order to support students more confidently. Time and place The course will take place at University Campus Suffolk, Ipswich, on Wednesday 12th June 2013, from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm. Cost FREE (supported by the Eastern England sigma Hub). Lunch and refreshments will be provided. To apply Simply reply to this email with your full postal and email contact details. You will receive acknowledgement immediately and joining instructions in due course. Places are strictly limited, to give all participants exclusive use of a PC running SPSS for the duration of the course. We hope to meet you at the "Boot Camp"!
