Friends, Rivals, and Lovers in Renaissance Mantua

Gonzaga Mantua, like all early modern city states, operated as a political and cultural unit in which basic operations were highly dependent on intimate interpersonal bonds: spouses co-ruled; siblings networked both within the court and outward through marriage and service; and unofficial relations of many kinds could produce significant consequences for the state. We invite contributions from a wide range of disciplines (history, art history, literature, music) that explore the relations between passions and politics in early modern Mantua, including (but not limited to) the following topics and their impact on the Mantuan court: extramarital affairs; sibling rivalry or cooperation; same-sex love or friendship; spousal collaboration; monastic community; parental love; treasonous alliances.

Please submit 150-word abstract (with title and keywords) and 1-page CV (including name, affiliation, and contact information) with subject heading "RSA 2014” to [log in to unmask] and to [log in to unmask] by 1 June 2013; responses will be sent by 8 June.
