3 year post-doctoral position – Identity and Social Media

Department of Psychology, Northumbria University, Ref: HLS1241
Salary: £25,703 - £31,238

We seek an experienced and highly motivated individual to work on new £1.2m EPSRC funded, multidisciplinary project on Digital Personhood. The post is to be based in the Psychology Department at Northumbria University, with partner organisations in Edinburgh University, Kings College London and the Open University. The project will explore new ways to represent our digital lives in filmic form, offering individuals the chance to reflect on their online identities and to edit their digital selves. This will require an exploration of the psychological phenomena that drives identity and privacy concerns. We will be working with film-makers, computer scientists and experts in social marketing who will develop the means to construct these personal films and our contribution will be in terms of participatory design and evaluation, but also in exploring the films' potential to enhance social understanding and empathy.

This position will require the individual to work in an interdisciplinary team, recruit participants sometimes from hard-to-reach sectors of society, communicate effectively with non-academic audiences and be proficient in qualitative data collection and analysis.

The Department of Psychology has a strong reputation for its undergraduate and postgraduate education, research, and consultancy and community activity. An exciting research culture thrives in the Department, which has built on earlier research success (where 90% of research was recognised as international quality in RAE 2008) and where opportunities for research collaboration across disciplines exist.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 therefore the successful candidate will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check.
