Chair in Biostatistics, Department of Clinical Sciences

Salary Range: £65,000 - £79,000 (depending upon experience)

LSTM is a premier institution in tropical diseases research, with a strong track record in high quality research, postgraduate training and technical assistance related to tropical countries. We have a research portfolio of £200m, 366 staff of which 183 are academic staff, 112 current PhD students, 63 Masters’ students and 225 short course and diploma students.  LSTM has international excellence demonstrated in HEFCE research performance. The portfolio includes basic drug discovery through to large drug trials and health services research, with teams working in trials, research synthesis and modelling. 

LSTM has created a number of new strategic academic posts to help underpin its research and training portfolio, particularly in applied health services research. We are seeking to appoint a Chair in Biostatistics, to develop excellence in the discipline through collaborative working in LSTM and centres overseas.  LSTM has four departments and this post will locate in the Department of Clinical Sciences. This Department has a clear translational research agenda and aims to develop a tropical Clinical Trials Unit from existing strength supplemented by further staff expansion.  The Department of Clinical Sciences has strong national and international links in infection, non-communicable diseases, capacity development and operational research.  Particularly strategic partnerships are found in the Wellcome Trust Tropical Centre, the Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme, the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme of Clinical Tropical Research and with the University of Warwick.

You will be required to engage in appropriate postgraduate teaching activities related to your own specialist interests, apply for/secure grant applications. LSTM will make funding available to you in order to appoint a Lecturer to support you in research activities.  You will have a strong track record of achievement in research, strategic leadership and teaching in applied health research with an international reputation in the field of medical statistics / epidemiology.  As a proven leader you will energise a vision for medical statistics engagement across LSTM and its partners that is in line with LSTM’s goal to save lives in resource poor countries.
