We are seeking a highly motivated bioinformatics analyst to play a key role in supporting groundbreaking research carried out at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Institute. The Institute emphasises a multi-disciplinary approach with the aim of linking the laboratory to the clinic and has state-of-the-art research facilities for over 300 scientists supported by outstanding on-site core services.

The Bioinformatics Core works closely with Institute research teams, developing techniques and providing support for analysis of data from high-throughput genomics and proteomics technologies, including next generation sequencing, microarrays and protein/peptide mass spectrometry. This is achieved through consultation on research projects, provision of data analysis and visualization tools and resources, and training.

This is an exciting opportunity to apply and develop your skills in support of cancer research projects that span a wide range of applications including gene expression profiling, ChIP-seq analysis of DNA-bound proteins, and cancer genome sequencing to identify SNPs, indels, copy number aberrations and structural variants.

Characteristic duties of Core bioinformatics analysts include the following: 

1. Collaborate with research scientists, consulting on experimental design, data QC and statistical analysis, and integration and visualization of data from multiple platforms

2. Develop data analysis strategies and contribute to design and implementation of analysis pipelines using best-of-             breed bioinformatics software packages/tools

3. Prepare training materials and deliver training courses primarily to laboratory-based researchers

You will have a degree in a scientific or computational discipline and preferably a postgraduate degree (MSc or PhD) and/or significant experience in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology. You should have good programming/scripting skills (e.g. R, Java, Perl, Python) and a working knowledge of a range of bioinformatics software tools and database resources.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in the use of statistical methods and/or software packages for analysing high-throughput sequencing data or microarray data, especially using R and associated Bioconductor packages. Experience in consulting with researchers on experimental design and bioinformatics analysis, and providing training, would be a distinct advantage.

The role requires excellent communication skills, involving regular interaction with research scientists and other bioinformaticians as well as contributing to training materials and courses. You will need to be highly organized with good time management skills to support multiple projects concurrently, with the ability to work well in a team.
