Objet : RE: Tyre research

Dear colleges and gentlemen,

I am carefully reading all the information because in the Netherlands we are currently thinking about measurements that can be taken to reduce the damage that is caused by heavy road haulage vehicles.

In the article that I received this morning from Glen Légère (RCGC2012, Grelet) is stated that the first generation of wide base tires (385/65R22.5 and 425/65R22.5) were found to cause a significant increase in pavement damage compared to conventional dual tires (COST 334, 2001). Grellet states on page 527 that several field and theoretical studies have shown that there is not a significant difference in pavement response between WBST and conventional dual tires.

Does anyone have the article which is referred to in the statement above (Priest et al. 2005) and may I receive a copy?

In practise we see in the Netherlands that this new generation of tyres is not used often on trailers that are allowed 9 or 10 tons per axle. An example of what the tyre manufactures are offering to the road haulage companies as innovative and new is stated on this website:

http://www.conti.nl/nieuws/continental-completeert-htr2-bandenlijn-voor-trailers/#

English translation: Continental provides the successful HTR2 tire for trailers in the size 425/65 R 22.5. This completes the HTR2 series. The HTR2 tires are particularly suitable for trailers of distribution trucks that operate nationally or regionally. Important advantages are the low rolling resistance and long life. The HTR2 line is developed for trailers that are used for national transport (distribution). The new 425/65 R 22.5 version has a load index of 165, tire is suitable for vehicles with 10-ton axles.

I am wondering how we can arrange policy to assure that new WBST generation is used in the transportation of heavy goods instead of decreasing width of tyres that is currently the direction of development in tire manufacturing.

Can anyone help me with ideas?

Best regards and thank you for your reply,

Dear Bob

Please find some Int'l  reports attached about the subject of wide base tyres vs dual tyre configuration and road damage. It looks like most studies agree well with your experience under the ALF in terms of rutting (deformation), but surface and near surface cracking also needs further investigation.

Trust you will find the attached reports useful.

Kind Regards

Morris De Beer

I am seeking assistance to identify references to research undertaken in the last 5 or 6 years comparing the pavement effects of wide single tyres with conventional dual tyres.

In Australia, a full scale ALF test was undertaken comparing the deformation of a 445/50R22.5 tyre with a dual set of 11R22.5 tyres.  The results are shown below.

I would be pleased to receive information about similar tests or research in countries other than Australia.
